Vino del Desierto Gets Gold Medals in International Competition

New recognitions received the Desert Wine initiative, promoted by the Arturo Prat University, winning two gold medals in the Catad-Or Wine Awards 2023 competition, an activity carried out by the International Organization of Vineyard and Wine (OIV) and the International Union of Enologists.

Catad-Or’s assessment this year in the Tamarugal Abocado harvest 2022 and Gros Colman 2022 strain was gold medal. It should be noted that the Gros Colman ink strain is not common in the world and is the first recognition it receives in this competition, participating alongside traditional strains that are sold on the market.

This competition has a 28-year history, being the most prestigious international wine competition in Latin America, which has a group of experts from different parts of the world such as France, Japan, Brazil, United Kingdom, Peru, Italy, Chile, Canada, Argentina, Croatia, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden and Germany, made up of sommeliers, winemakers, specialized press, among others, who deliberate in blind tastings established by the International Organization of Vineyard and Wine.

Alberto Martínez, rector of the Arturo Prat University, was very happy with this new achievement obtained by Vino del Desierto, indicating that this is the result of years of work of the university team, but also of the associated farmers who continue to advance to transform this product into a regional icon.

“It is a pride these stimuli, the first we received in 2018, also a gold medal, five years later we continue to reap achievements which allows us to look in perspective at the excellent work done by all those who have contributed in this project and who have managed to recover traditions from our region, also allowing us to transfer knowledge to our local farmers,” said the rector.

The director of Desert Wine, Marcelo Lanino, indicated that being renowned by Catad Wine Awars is a pride, since it is the most important contest in Latin America, which shows us that we have done a good job, which has meant effort and sacrifices, but we hope that with the work we do with our strategic partners, that is, farmers and producers from the Province of Tamarugal, we will continue on this path of producing excellent wine and that it can continue on its way to other places in the world.

Lanino also thanked the Regional Government, the Regional Council of Tarapacá and Teck Quebrada Blanca, who have trusted in the work of UNAP and Desert Wine, currently allowing the development of technological transfer and knowledge to farmers, who are currently holding workshops on marketing, marketing, branding, among others. Likewise, the project director thanked Viña Santa Carolina for his support in the oenological area, which through his Deputy Manager of Enology Premium Wines, Alejandro Wedeles, has technically advised Wine of the Desert.

Recognitions

Since 2018 Wine of the Desert has received recognitions of oenological quality, the first being a gold medal in the Catad International Competition .Or Wines Awards, with the Tamarugal strain on the docked.

In 2020, in the national competition Guide Tasting Table La CAV, both the Tamarugal strain and the Gros Colman ink, obtained scores between 90 and 91, which catalogues them as Super Premium wines. The same year, the Tamarugal strain won its second gold medal in the Catad competition, this time in its dry wine version.

The following year, on 2021, in the national Vinau Guide for small producers, the Tamarugal and Gros Colman strain, obtained scores between 89 and 90, being classified as special wines.

This year 2023, previously the oenological quality of the Tamarugal strain with scores between 90 and 92 had already been ratified in the Alistair Cooper Guide, now adding these two gold medals in Catad-Or Wine Awars.
